Background on the
village of Vilcabamba
Vilcabamba is a
magical village in the Andes Mountains. The land is a mix of mostly fertile
farmland, lush valley, and steep hillsides with seasonal springs and springs. Fruits, vegetables and flowers are
in abundance given the fertile soil and mild climate. It’s never too hot or too
cold, with a temperature around 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Locals
call the weather “eternal spring.”
The people in the
village are warm and welcoming. Among our neighbors are Saraguros, Native Americans
from southern Ecuador. There is a high degree of personal security so it is
safe walking around town or hiking in the mountains.
Vilcabamba is
called “The Valley of Longevity” because so many residents live so long. Over
60 people lived to be over 100 years old, sometimes well over 100. Several
medical teams have investigated longevity in Vilcabamba. Many people think the
long lives are due to the water, which is very pure and clean. Others say it is
because of the tranquility of the Valley.
The name
Vilcabamba means “Sacred Place.” The energy of the land in Vilcabamba is very
special, very peaceful. The Incas used to bring their wounded soldiers here for
rapid healing. A Japanese businessman with a life threatening heart problem had
a miraculous recovery in Vilcabamba and was so grateful he built a hospital in
town. Just south of the Equator, Vilcabamba is the Heart of the Earth.
THE LAND
The land is
absolutely spectacular. It includes a mountain range, meadows, and a farm.
There are coffee plants and abundant fruit trees on the land, including
Cherimoya fruit trees, banana trees, papaya, orange, and lemon trees, all
organic. There are also about 20 cows and a donkey.
The views from
the land are breathtaking. You look down into the valley, and across to other
Andes mountains and to the sacred Mandango Mountain. It’s a spectacular
panoramic view of natural beauty.
With over 130
acres, you have lots of privacy. When you want to connect with other people in
the village, it’s only a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the charming town square or to
the Madre Tierra Hotel Spa Restaurant, a fun gathering spot with delicious
organic meals and people visiting from around the world. You can often find
evening entertainment there such as live music and fire dancers. Many artisans
display their jewelry at the hotel, which is great for personal use or gifts.
There are
extensive hiking and horseback riding trails with magnificent vistas throughout
the property and Valley.
You may want to relax or play in one of the
many areas including the streams, forests, meadows, and trails. You can grow
vegetables and herbs for your personal use or income. You may want to just stay quiet in
your private home, visit a friend, or venture out into the Vilcabamba village
or surrounding areas. You can easily go to the nearby Podocarpus National Park,
hike the sacred Mandango Mountain, or go on excursions to other villages and
magical places… beautiful Ecuador has so much to offer.
